Virgil Dale Liefer's Obituary
Virgil Dale Liefer, 79 years of Red Bud, IL, passed away on October 9, 2024 at Red Bud Regional Care, Red Bud, IL. He was born November 3, 1944, in Red Bud, IL.
Virgil was a retired boat captain from Consolidated Coal Co. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Red Bud VFW Post 6632 where he was past commander,and a member of American Legion Post and Red Bud Masonic Lodge 427 A.F. & A.M. He was a US army veteran. He served in Vietnam as a crew chief and tail gunner on a CH-47 helicopter called Easy Money for a group called "Guns A Go-Go". Virgil loved the outdoors, he was an avid boater, hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his children, Keith (Kathy) Liefer, Kimberly (Barry) Gambrell, Cody (Nicole) Liefer, Leah (Justin) Russell and Britton (Taylor) Liefer, his grandchildren Courtney (Michael) Skoworn, Kayla Liefer, Kassidy Liefer, Kaden Nichols, Dekan Russell, Makenzie Liefer and Mason Liefer, his great grandchildren Hayley & Michael Skoworn, his brothers, Merlin Liefer, Roy Liefer and Donald Liefer, along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry H. and Wilma, nee Kruse, Liefer and his sister Sharon DeRouse and his former wife, Vicky Liefer.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Bud, IL. Memorial service will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with Rev. Brian Nowak, officiating. Interment with military honors will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
