I'll always remember my dear Uncle Bill -- his kind demeanor (that masked his wonderful sense of humor). On visits to Uncle Bill and Aunt Mary's house, we kids would enjoy ourselves in the basement, though we were also eager to have supper and the special cookies and treats Aunt Mary made, especially good was the Texas sheet cake! We knew we wouldn't get scolded too much at Uncle Bill's house.
Whenever we met, Uncle Bill would gently squeeze my shoulder and say, "How are you doing little sweetie," though he often used the French variant, "comment allez-vous," just for fun! He always radiated kindness and calmness and made me feel special. Just seeing his smile made us all happy to know him.
Many years later, I was fortunate to travel through parts of Canada on route to Matthew and Sonya's wedding in the same car with Uncle Bill. He tolerated chatter pretty well while driving, though he issued the occasional request that we have 15 minutes of silence. He made this request softly and kindly (well, we knew he meant what he said). He was patience incarnate and subtle enough to let us know what he was really thinking!
Uncle Bill loved his family deeply, and it was always a lovely sight to see him surrounded my his many children and grand kids. He'll always be in our thoughts and prayers.
