Dear Kurt, Karen, and family. I was so sorry about the death of your Mother. At 96 she had touched so many persons. I did my student teaching in High School with FTA under Mrs. Herbst's kindergarden Class. At my Sr. Award ceremony in High School she presented me with a green hand-blown owl. It still sets on my desk after all of these years.[1968] Her enthusiasm about teaching added to my desire to teach. We have taught 42 years of which two were Jr. High Principal in Dixon MO. and my wife Gladys 43in Crocker, MO. Someone said to go to a small town, get involved with church and community and live happily ever after. That is what Gladys and I have done here in the Ozarks. We have five children and 21 grandchildren. when our last grandchildren were born they were triplet girls. When I was in her kindergarden class she had triplets; Faith Hope, & Charity Reibling. I thought of them. Our prayers are with your family. Randy

My education stsrted in 1980 with the help of Mrs Herbst because that's all I knew her as. In the early 2000's I had the pIeasure of meeting Mrs Herbst at the Garden Place in Columbia Illinois. Some 25 years later she still remembered who I was. I want to send my sincere condolences the family of Thelma and say Rest In Heaven Mrs Herbst!

Mrs. Herbst was the best ever. She was my afternoon kindegarden teacher. I will always remember how patient she was with me, and tolerated my chattiness. She is truly a gem and will be missed.

Please accept my deepest condolences on your family's loss. I have very fond memories of Mrs. Herbst. She was a remarkable woman and a gifted educator. Perhaps more than anyone other than my own mother and my mothers' sister (a Lutheran Church organist), Mrs. Herbst was responsible for encouraging me to play the piano....it all started when she needed an accompanist for her singing youngsters at summer Bible School. She made music a whole lot of fun for the little ones and for me. To say that she 'encouraged' me is not exactly accurate. She basically 'decreed' that it was my duty to play whenever she needed an accompanist...there was no arguing with Mrs. Herbst. She was a force of nature. The Unsinkable Molly Brown had nothing on Thelma Herbst. Yet she was never harsh....she was always cheerful and positive and patient. As a result, she made me and anyone else in her sphere of influence always feel very special. The world was a better place because of Mrs. Herbst. Rest In Peace.

Rest In Peace Mrs. Herbst! You will always be remembered not only as one of my favorite teachers, but as the best house in Columbia for Trick or Treating. lol We could always count on you for homemade goodies when we were kids. You are always in my thoughts!
