Raymond Richard Hohlt's Obituary
Raymond Richard Hohlt, 80 years of Millstadt, IL, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Barnes Jewish Medical Center in St. Louis, MO., after his second battle with lymphoma. Born October 25, 1945 to Raymond Charles and Clara (Lang) Hohlt. Ray and his family eventually moved to Millstadt, Illinois where he began a lifetime of loving association with the town. He met Barbara Bertelsman on a school bus and they eventually married on September 9, 1967. Their children Brian (Karla) Hohlt and Susan (Jim) Fogarty, and grandchildren: Kace Hohlt, Lindsey Hohlt McDonald (David), and Addison Hohlt; and Patrick and Thomas Fogarty, were lucky to have a father, and grandfather who loved them dearly and supported them fiercely. He enjoyed attending their activities while they were young and visiting them wherever there lives took them, especially after retiring from Luby Equipment Services, where he had worked for twenty-two years, in 1997.
In 1985, after having served as an alderman for one term, Ray was elected to be Mayor of Millstadt. After two terms he continued to serve the village: from participating in the Jaycees as a young man to serving in elected office to leading its Planning Commission for years, his love for public service was second only to that he had for his family. He was a longtime member of the Optimist Club, the Millstadt Gun Club, Zion Evangelical Church's Z-Team, and various other groups that made his hometown a better place.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and a half sister, Ramona Gee. His loving wife of 58 years Barbara now resides at Reflections Garden Place, a memory care facility in Columbia, Illinois.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025, from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, at Zion Evangelical Church, Millstadt, IL. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday November 30, 2025, at Zion Evangelical Church, with Pastor Darrell Weber, officiating. Private interment will be held in the Mt. Evergreen Cemetery, Millstadt, Illinois.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to Alzheimer's Association of St. Louis 9370 Olive Street Rd., Olivette, MO 63132 or Millstadt Optimist Club's Scholarship funds.
