Mr. Schlafly was the chairman of the board of directors of Columbia National Bank, Columbia, IL, a bank which he and a group of investors established in 1976. He served as president of the bank until his retirement in 1997. He began his banking career in 1966 at Union National Bank, East St. Louis, IL. He was a past president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia, IL, member of the East St. Louis, then Columbia Rotary since 1966, and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia, IL. "Hutch" was a 1962 graduate of St. Louis University High School and Rockhurst College Class of 1966.
