Joseph Bert Gravot's Obituary
In the fall of 1937, JoeÆs family moved from East St. Louis to Triple Lakes Road. Joe and his sister attended the former one room Droit School which was just across the road from where they lived. After graduating from Droit School , they both attended and graduated from Dupo Community High School. During the summer of 1943, Joe met Aileen Sutter and shortly after, Joe enlisted in the US Navy. He reported to Great Lakes Naval Training Center on November 15, 1944, at age 17. After Joe was honorably discharged from the Navy, he and Aileen were married on November 29, 1946, and remained together for 60 years. On December 3, 2006, God called Aileen to himself at their residence on Oakdale School Road in Millstadt. Joe retired from Mobil Oil Corporation on June 1, 1984 after completing 35 years of service working at the former East St. Louis Refinery; the El Palito (little stick) Refinery in Venezuela; and the Paulsboro Refinery in New Jersey. While living in Venezuela the family were members of Iglesia Evangelical Luterana El Salvador Sinodo de Misuri (Lutheran Church of The Savior LCMS) in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and would make the 90-mile trip from their home in Valencia on the first Sunday of each month to attend worship services and to partake of the Holy Sacrament. Joe was transferred from the El Palito Refinery to the Paulsboro Refinery on October 15, 1975. While living in New Jersey, the GravotÆs became members of Martin Lutheran Chapel Church, LCMS, in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Upon retiring, Aileen and Joe returned to Millstadt and settled on their 60 acre farm that they had purchased in 1968. They once again became members of Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS, in Millstadt. Joe remained living on the farm until his death . Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen B. Gravot, nee Sutter, his parents: Joseph and Marie, nee Bailey, Gravot, AileenÆs parents: Henry and Edna, nee Hoock, Sutter, brothers-in-law: John W. Cason, Clarence Sutter and John Fischer, sister-in-law: Gladys Fischer, nee Sutter, and nephews: Dan Cason & Wayne Sutter. Surviving are JoeÆs three sons: Joel (Roxana) Gravot of Richmond Heights, MO., Alan (Joanne) Gravot of Gibbstown, NJ. & Michael (Christine) Gravot of Paulsboro, NJ., his granddaughters: Morgan, Aileen & Liesl Gravot of Paulsboro, NJ., a grandson: Christopher Gravot of Millstadt, step granddaughters: Evelyn Townsend of Paulsboro, NJ. & Kassandra McConnell of Richmond Heights, MO., his stepson: Paul McConnell of Georgia, his sister: Dortha May Cason of Millstadt, his nephew: Kevin (Tina) Cason of Millstadt, his aunt: Hortense Chase of Belleville, sister-in-law: Georgine Sutter of Millstadt, nephews: Norman (Sandra) Sutter and Clay (Tammi) Sutter of Millstadt, Gerald (Patricia) Fischer of Collinsville, his nieces: Karen (Gerald) Rains of Belleville and Marilyn (Harold) Hughes of Millstadt, IL.
