I met Joan in May, 1979, when my brother,Mark and Joan’s sister, Fran were dating in college. A friend and I were to fly to Florida for a brief vacation before having to start a summer job. We were to leave the car at the Wilkenson family home for the duration of our absence.
Well, as that sojourn of my twenties went, there were travelers checks and cash for both of us. So, we went on our spending ways thru Florida! I thought he had money and he thought I had money. On the shuttle ride to the airport in Florida I asked, “How much money do you have left?” He answered, “About $2.”
I gasped. Oh, no.
The whole flight back to St. Louis I was thinking how to borrow gas money from Joan so we could get back to Jacksonville, Illinois - where my checkbook and all other belongings were.
You know, incidents like these can be a portal into a person and their many and varied responses thru life. Certainly mine, for not safeguarding monetary requirements for our near future, but also toJoan for her way of responding to someone stressed and in distress.
Joan sent us on our way back to Jacksonville, Illinois, with a full tank of gas and a much appreciated loan to make it there safely!
What a gem of a person! …and we had just met!
Since having gotten to know her, I have found her to be so kind and friendly.
Just a super person.
I won’t forget her anytime soon.
(And, yes, she got her $20 back)
God bless Joan.
