Hilda Mary Schaefer, nee Frierdich, 93 of Millstadt, Ill., born March 1, 1923 in Columbia, Ill., passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Columbia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Columbia, Ill.
Hilda was retired as a cook from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill., Daughters of Isabella Circle 329, Perpetual Help Council of Catholic Women and was a volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for 17 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, August J. Schaefer whom she married on August 22, 1945 and who died on January 21, 1971, a daughter Mary Ann Ortmann who died on December 18, 1972, her parents, William H. and Bertha, nee Menner, Frierdich, her brothers, Elmer and William E. (Helen) Frierdich and her grandson-in-law, Eric S. Mueller.
She is survived by her son, Monsignor Kenneth J. Schaefer of Herrin, Ill., her daughter, Norma Jean (Richard) Brune of Millstadt, Ill., brother, Walter (Agnes) Frierdich of Millstadt, Ill., her three grandchildren, Monica (Paul) Winkeler of O’Fallon, Ill., Maribeth (Chris) Keeven and Marcia Mueller of Millstadt, Ill., 8 great grandchildren, she is also survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives & friends.
A special thank you to the nurses, CNA’s and staff of the Columbia Rehabilitation in Columbia, Ill., Heartland Hospice, for their special care of our mother, and a special thank you to Msgr. Marvin Volk and Msgr. Carl Scherrer for their pastoral care.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill., or to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel New School Fund in Herrin, Ill.
Visitation: visitation will be on Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Leesman Funeral Home (7 East Mill St.) in Millstadt, Ill., and on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral: Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill.
Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Millstadt, Ill.
