Harold Steffenauer's Obituary
We gather here, not to mourn, but to celebrate the grand life of Harold Conrad Steffenauer, known affectionately as Putter. Born on July 14, 1939, in Columbia, Illinois, Harold was a man who knew how to live life on his own terms. He was a man of simple pleasures, yet his life was anything but ordinary.
Harold was not your average crane operator. He spent over 41 years with Luhr Brothers, and while he was undoubtedly loyal to his job, he found unique ways to sprinkle in a little fun. Whether he was swinging the wrecking ball to the beat of his favorite tunes, or meticulously planning the perfect crane dance for the annual company party, he was always thoughtful about keeping spirits high. This courageous man was also a humble leader. Being a fire chief from 1969-1973 in Columbia, Illinois, didn't stop him from driving the fire truck in the town's parades, complete with a firefighter's hat and the biggest grin anyone had ever seen.
Harold was an avid bowler in his youth, proving that he was not one to shy away from a challenge. His competitive spirit was also evident in his role as a gymnastics teacher, always encouraging his students to reach for the stars and then do a backflip. His love for travel was sparked by his beloved wife of 25 years, Carolynn. After finally convincing him to venture on one cruise, they ended up sailing the seas on more than 27 cruises together. As Mark Twain once said, "Explore. Dream. Discover." And that's exactly what Harold did.
Harold's world orbited around his family. He is survived by his wife Carolynn, his children: Gary and Jeff Steffenauer of Vilonia, Lisa Dinger (Bill West) of Kingdom City, MO, sister: Mary Muskopf and brother: Mick Steffenauer Jr. both of Columbia, IL, grandchildren: Gary Jr, Jacob, Becky, Aaron, Michael and Keirsten all Steffenauers, numerous great and great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by parents, Michael and Helen Steffenauer, son: Randy Steffenauer; granddaughter: Nikki Atterberry, great grandson Tyler Atterberry, and sister: LouAnn Wolf. His love for them was a beacon of light in their lives and his legacy will continue to guide them.
As we bid farewell to our dear Harold, we encourage you to share your favorite stories, memories, and pictures of him on the memorial page. And remember, as Harold would say with a chuckle, "Life's too short to not bowl a strike, ride a crane, or go on a cruise.
