Harold C. Metter's Obituary
Harold C. Metter, 89 years, of Columbia, IL, passed away on March 15, 2018, at Oak Hill Care Center, Waterloo, IL. He was born August 6, 1928, in Chester, IL, son of the late August and Eva, nee Spichalski, Metter. He was married to Dorothy, nee Herrmann, Metter, who survives him. They were married September 6, 1950, in Columbia, IL.
Harold was an enthusiastic gardener, well known for his prized and delicious tasting tomatoes. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, he ran a taxidermy business at his home. He was a member of the St. Louis Jazz Club, and played the clarinet for many years at local hangouts throughout the area. At one time he and Ken Oexner played at various nursing homes and were known as the "Two Grumpy Old Men" band. Harold proudly served in the Korean War where he was introduced to the construction trade, and was a member of American Legion Post 581, Columbia, IL. As a member of Carpenter's Union Local 662 for 60 years, he built many homes in the Monroe County area. Harold and Dorothy, married for 67 years, were both part of the original Strassenfest and took part in many festivals, while Harold played the stomp fiddle. Known for his art of story telling and jokes, he was a wonderful father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many.
Also, surviving are his son, Steven (Mary Sue) Metter of Columbia, IL; daughter, Connie (Larry) Costello of Kirkwood, MO; grandchildren, Stephanie Metter, Abbey and Kelly Metter, Brandon, Kevin (Alexandra), and Andrew Costello, along with other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Alan Metter; daughter, Marilyn (Don) Borcharding, along with a brother, Clem Metter.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 24, 2018, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia, IL. A Funeral Mass will be held following visitation at the church at 11:00 am, with Fr. Carl Scherrer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Columbia, IL.
