Harold Harres' Obituary
Harold Harres, 93 yrs., of Columbia, IL, passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis, MO. He was born in Columbia, IL, the son of the late Herman and Mathilda, nee Mitweide, Harres. He was married to Dorothy, nee Schneider, Harres, who survives him. They were married August 10, 1947, in Columbia, IL. Harold lived a full, charmed life in his eyes. He grew up on the same farm on which he spent his entire life and always said he had the happiest childhood; very simple, a good dog and everything he wanted. After a short stint at SIU Carbondale he decided to help his country and joined the U. S. Army Air Corp. He eventually was sent to southern Italy as a navigator, flying B24 Liberators on bombing missions over northern Italy, Poland and Germany. Upon his return he finished his college at St. Louis University. After several jobs he started working at Weilbachers Department Store in Columbia and eventually became the store President until his retirement after 30 years in 1986. He was known for his kind nature, fair business sense and community support. Harold’s true passion were things closer to home. Nothing was more important to him than his family. He was married to the love of his life, Dorothy Schneider, for 69 years, His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren put an extra gleam in his eye. He took great interest in every activity they were involved in, which was wide-ranging from track meets, baseball, hockey and basketball games, cheer leading, dance, music and much more. He kept a meticulous yard and home and was especially proud of his raspberries. He was an avid golfer and could still putt with laser precision until the end. He was a member of the American Legion Post 581 for over 50 years, St. Paul United Church of Christ, and was the Columbia School Board President during the 60’s and 70’s.
