Gilbert W. Phillippe's Obituary
Gilbert W. Phillippe, 85, of Red Bud, IL, passed away at Red Bud Nursing Home, Red Bud, IL, following a battle with colon cancer. He was born in Clark County, IL, the son of Noble and Nellie (Gilbert) Phillippe. Gil was raised in the Annapolis area of Crawford County, and was a WWII Army Veteran who served in the European Theatre. Gil was employed by Marathon Oil Co., from 1947-1979. In 1967 he became the Personnel and Safety Manager for Marathon's Robinson Refinery and held that position until his retirement from Marathon in 1979.Gil was always active with community affairs during his working years and in retirement. He served as Robinson, IL Mayor from 1993-1997, and was instrumental in the construction and completion of the Crawofrd County Jail, Veteran's Museum in Robinson, and forming Habitat for Humanity, building 14 homes with his peers. He was a Crawford County Board Member, a member of the Robinson Elks, lifetime member of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, charter member of the American Legion Post #0069, and honorary member of the Red Bud, IL, Rotary. He had been the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Crawford Memorial Hospital, later becoming their Executive Director of the Crawford Memorial Hospital Foundation. He was the Executive Director of the Lincoln Trail College Foundation and on the Advisory Committee of the Mary Heath Foundation.Gil will be dearly missed by his wife, Genelle, and all family members. Gil was a compassionate, caring, and kind gentleman to all. We will always remember his cheerful, quiet manner. "And the earth shall claim your limbs, and then shall you truly dance." Kahlil Gibran.
