OBITUARY
Eugene R Poettgen
Eugene R. Poettgen, 83 years old of Saint Louis, MO. formerly of Dupo, IL., passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Bethesda Southgate Nursing Center, St. Louis, MO. He was born March 22, 1936, in East St. Louis, IL.
Mr. Poettgen was a member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo, IL. He was a 1955 graduate of Dupo High School. He retired from Dupo High School as a custodian after almost 30 years. The high school kids always called him "Mean Gene the Sweeping Machine." He was a Dupo Educator Hall of Fame 2008 recipient.
Surviving are his wife, of 62 years, Jacqueline Poettgen, nee Muskopf, his daughter, Beth (Steve) Hankamer, his son, Mark (Shawn) Poettgen, his daughter, Lynne Vance, his grandchildren, Erich (Jillian) Hankamer, Logan Hankamer, Kristopher Poettgen, Kellan Poettgen, Kerilyn Poettgen; his sister, Mary Lou Judge, along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Mary, nee German, Poettgen and his granddaughter, Kelsey Vance; his brothers, Vincent, Fred and Edward; his sister, Gloria Chaklos.
Graveside services will be on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery, Columbia, IL., with Pastor Todd Mushaney officiating.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to Christ United Church of Christ air conditioning fund or to The Shriner's Hospital for Children of St. Louis.
