Elmer (Hugo) Sandheinrich's Obituary
Elmer (Hugo) Sandheinrich, with his family by his side, 84, of Millstadt, IL, died July 18, 2022, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Elmer was born October 3, 1937 in Venedy, IL. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, John and Laura, nee Wienstroer, Sandheinrich; brothers Charles, Lloyd and Elroy; sisters, Mary Louise (Edward) Getz, Rita Ann (Bernard) Gebke and Lois (Casimir) Hummert; and brothers-in-law, Wilburn Gale, Ralph Klasing, Ron Ostendorf, and Jim Mazander.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Darleen, nee Heggemeier, Sandheinrich; daughters Kathy (Norm “Shorty”) Toenjes and Kimberly Edgar, and son, Kelly (Lori) Sandheinrich; grandchildren Lauren (JV) Fiss, Emily (Craig) Kombrink, Jacob Toenjes, Ryan (Kate) Edgar, Tyler Edgar, Megan (Tyler) Kleinschmidt, Shelby (Andrew) Braxmeier, Alex Sandheinrich and Luke Sandheinrich; great-grandchildren Charli and Nora Fiss, Kendall and Colby Kombrink, Zeppelin Edgar, Ford Braxmeier and Tyler Kleinschmidt; sisters Elizabeth Gale and Laverne (Robert) Lintker; three sisters-in-law, Arlene, Patricia and Betty Gay Sandheinrich; Sisters-in-law Fern Klasing, Opal Koch, Judy (Don) Ostendorf, June Ostendorf, Norma Mazander and brother-in-law Harlin (Kathy) Heggemeier. He had numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He retired from Katsinas Construction Company as a carpenter. He was a member of the St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council since December 17, 1956. He was a member of St. James Parish, the Knights of Columbus, the St. James 50 and Over Club and Commercial Club in Millstadt, IL. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, and cards, especially poker and euchre. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was a wonderful and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Elmer played baseball in the Mon-Clair Baseball League for St. Libory and Millstadt. He was known as a knuckleballing pitcher and hitter feared throughout the league in the 60’s and 70’s. He was inducted into the Mon-Clair Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 with the honor of being one of the first 15 inducted. As a pitcher and outfielder, he was the Batting Champion with a .432 batting average in 1970. He was the winning pitcher of four straight All-Star Games from 1969-1972.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Millstadt Senior Center or St. James Church. Memorial masses are also appreciated. Services: Visitation will be from 9 am to 11 am on Monday, July 25th, with mass immediately following. Burial will be held at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt, IL with Reverend Monsignor Carl E. Scherrer presiding.
