I remember Egon well. I was at the airport in St. Louis along with my parents, my aunt, uncle and cousin when his plane landed. I was 12, ten years younger than Egon. In those days a person had to be sponsored and the sponsor must agree to let the person live with them for six months to get acclimated and find a job, learn the language, etc. My aunt and uncle were the sponsors. After only a few weeks, my aunt became very ill and Egon could no longer stay with them. He came to live with my family. My friend and I decided we would teach English to Egon. One day it was the word rain, so we opened an umbrella and poured water over the umbrella and pointed to the drops. We all had fun, but I don’t think he learned much English from us.
We had many fun times. One of his favorite things was going with me and my parents to the farm in Burnt Prairie, Il. He often reminisced about those days.
He also taught me to drive when I was 16 and would often let me borrow his brand new Chevy Super Sport!!
I haven’t lived in Illinois since 1976, but we went to each other’s weddings and he knew Ron and I got to know Lee. I’m so thankful for the privilege of knowing Lee. She is a wonderful person and so strong in her faith and such an encouragement to me. Through her and Egon, I feel I know their family well.
