Clarice Joyce Giffhorn's Obituary
Clarice Joyce Giffhorn, 91 years of Waterloo, IL, passed away on August 23, 2024 at Oak Hill Nursing Home, Waterloo, IL. She was born May 16, 1933, in East St. Louis, IL.
Clarice grew up in Columbia, IL. She was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical St. Paul Church in Columbia. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1951. Following high school Clarice attended the Illinois State University, Normal, IL, where she obtained her Bachelor's in Physical Education, then went on to obtain her Master's from George William College. She started her teaching career at LaSalle-Peru High School in LaSalle, IL. From the early 1960's until 2017 she was the full-time physical education teacher at Highland Park, then became a substitute teacher until her retirement in 2017. During the 1970's, Clarice and her sister, Rosalie, owned and operated Camp O-Tahn-Agon in Three Lakes, WI., a girls summer camp. After selling the camp in 1983, the sisters went on to purchase a cabin and would spend their summers in Three Lakes where they enjoyed golfing and visiting with friends. An avid University of Illinois and St. Louis Cardinals fan, she made several trips to Illini football and basketball games a favorite being the annual Illini Mizzou Braggin Rights game and Cardinals spring training in Jupiter, FL. She was also a secret Chicago White Sox fan.
Surviving are her Cousins, Stephen (Lucy) Johnson, Gregory (Terri) Johnson, Douglas (Ellen) Johnson, Gretchen “Gigi” (Brent) Abbott, Gregg Giffhorn; along with other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, William and Rose (Kull) Giffhorn and Sister, Rosalie Giffhorn.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 31, 2024,10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Leesman Funeral Home, Columbia, IL. Services will be held Saturday, August 31, 2024, 12:00 pm at Leesman Funeral Home, Columbia, IL, with Pastor Jonathan Bangera officiating. Interment will follow in the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery, Columbia, IL.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to St. Paul U.C.C., 127 St. Paul St., Columbia, IL 62236.
