Billy Joe Johnson's Obituary
Herrin- Billy Joe Johnson, 72, of Herrin, died at 8:27 AM, Monday, November 9, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.
Billy Joe was born on December 23, 1947 in Charleston, MO to Arnold E. and Evelyn E. (Morgan) Johnson. He married Joie Lynn Moore on November 25, 2016 and she survives of Herrin.
He was Baptist and a former longtime member of Elco Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp and served his country bravely while stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Once honorably discharged, he returned home and worked several years ats a laborer and then worked as a janitor until his retirement at Choate in Chester. After his retirement he enjoyed tending bar at various area VFW and American Legion Posts, including, Anna, Murphysboro, and Herrin. He also volunteered his time as chaplain of the Honor Guard.
Billy Joe enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and going out socializing at the VFW. He was a quiet man with a stubborn demeanor who enjoyed joking around with friends and being a good grandpa. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife; Joie Lynn Johnson of Herrin, son; Curtis Allen Johnson, daughter; Angela Carten of Herrin, 4 grandchildren; Sierra Johnson, Gavin Johnson, and Bella and Naudia Carten all of Herrin. He is also survived by his brothers; Floyd Johnson and Sherry Garner of Barlow, KY and Rodger Johnson and wife LaDonna of Buncombe and sister; Judy Hunter and husband Shapley of Thebes along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife- Janice.
A memorial service with military honors will be conducted later at Mounds National Cemetery. Memorial arrangements were entrusted to Leesman Funeral Homes of southern Illinois under the direction of Devin McCluskie.
